Colloidal Silver: Anthrax Treatment
June 21, 2008 – 1:01 pmThere are three types of anthrax treatment available and all are in the form of antibiotics. They are ciprofloxacin, tetracyclines (including doxycycline), and penicillins. For those who have been exposed to anthrax but do not have symptoms, they will be given antibiotics for 60 days in order to help reduce the risk and/or progression of the disease due to inhaled anthrax.
Anthrax is a disease caused by bacillus anthracis, which is a bacterium that forms spores. A bacterium is a tiny organism made up of one cell and many of them can cause a disease. A spore is a dormant cell that has the potential to come to life under the right conditions. The three types of anthrax include skin, lungs, and digestive. The disease is not known to spread from one person to another but people can contract it from animals and as a weapon.
People can become infected with anthrax by breathing in anthrax spores from infected animal products, such as wool, or by handling products from infected animals. Other ways people can become infected include eating undercooked meat from infected animals. When used as a weapon, anthax can be very dangerous. In 2001, there were 22 cases of anthrax infection when the disease was deliberately spread through the U.S. postal system by sending letters with powder containing anthrax.
Antibiotic Anthrax Treatment
Antibiotics are used to treat all types of anthrax, however, early identification and treatment is important. For anthrax treatment after exposure, people will need to take antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin or penicillin combined with the anthrax vaccine in order to prevent an anthrax infection. For treatment after infection, patients will begin a 60-day course of antibiotics, the success of which will depend on the type of anthrax and how soon the anthrax treatment commences.
